WHAT KWANZAA TAUGHT ME ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND HOW IT CHANGED EVERYTHING.

There are a lot of ways to learn leadership.

Most of the ways I encounter teach you to perform, produce, and adapt to systems that were never designed with you in mind.

They teach you how to manage outcomes, but they rarely teach you how to remain aligned with yourself while doing it.

If you stay in the leadership spaces that teach you these leadership methods and techniques long enough, you start to feel, well, off…

You can be effective and still feel “off”.

You can be successful and still feel misaligned.

You can be leading and still feel like you are negotiating parts of yourself just to stay in the room.

I’ve always known there had to be another way to lead.

Ep.1/

7 Prinicples. Infinite Possibilities.

What I found was not in a corporate training manual, mandatory professional development, or leadership seminar.

It was in something I had known since childhood.

Kwanzaa.

Not as an obscure holiday that only a few Black people even choose to observe.

Not as a seven day marker at the close of the year.

But as a framework for my entire life.

A set of principles that was never meant to be seasonal or of the moment. principles that speak to how we build, how we decide, and how we show up for ourselves and each other.

What I realized is that these principles are not just cultural or even ornamental. They are operational.

They offer structure where other leadership models offer mere performance.

They offer grounding where many systems demand constant output.

They offer alignment where many environments reward disconnection.

So…I built my practice around them.

I lead through seven principles:

SYNERGY - because leadership in not meant to be carried alone.

AUTONOMY - because self-definition and choice are the foundation of influence.

COLLABORATIVE RESPONSIBILITY - because we are accountable to more than just ourselves.

SHARED RESOURCE PROSPERITY - because success should circulate, not concentrate.

STRATEGIC INTENT - because movement without direction is just going through the motions.

CREATIVE EXCELLENCE - because innovation is not optional - it is necessary.

TRUST - because leadership without integrity will always collapse under pressure.

These are not abstract ideas.

they are tools. tools that shape how i make decisions. How i build relationships. how i navigate complexity. how i lead when the path is not clear.

They guide how I lead in every professional space in my life as a performer, educator, board member, business woman, and beyond.

I even use them in personal spaces, too. It shows up in how I govern myself as a wife, mom, a homegirl, a martial artist, and a soror.

And here’s what I’ve learned:

Any system that encounters these principles becomes stronger.

More aligned.

More effective.

More human.

Because when leadership is grounded in principle:

  • decisions become clearer

  • relationships become more honest

  • outcomes become more sustainable

You are no longer reacting to the system. You are reshaping it; and isn’t that what we really need?

This is especially true in seasons of transition.

When you are outgrowing what once fit and the title no longer matches the calling. When you know something is shifting, even if you cannot fully name it yet.

This is not a breakdown. This is a moment for leadership.

And in that moment, you need more than advice.

You need a framework that can hold you steady while you move. One that can fortify your very bones while your spirit is shifting.

This framework is mine.

and if you are here, I’m ready to teach you.

Because you do not have to choose between who you are and how you lead. You do not have to disconnect from your values or your culture to be effective.

You do not have to shrink your vision in order to fit the room you are in.

You can build something different.

You can lead with clarity. With intention. With cultural power that informs every decision you make.

This is what we explore here in the J9 Collective Journal. .

Not just how to lead. Not just how to transition from one “thing” to the next.

But how to move on when leading in that system is no longer an option. It’s how to move through transition in a way that is aligned, sustainable, and expansive enough to carry you into the next season.
